We are a small family farm located in the heart of the Ottawa Valley. The Dobson family began farming in the scenic Ottawa Valley in the 1830s. The current farm location, in the Upper Ottawa Valley was established by Robert Dobson's great-great grandfather in the year 1857. Cattle have grazed this land continuously since then. Bob and his family hope that many more generations can keep farming this land. He believes that it is only through our continuing efforts to be good stewards of the land that our farm and our way of life will be sustainable well into the future. On our farm we believe that our well being is directly related to the environmental health of the farm.
At first a relatively modest operation, we worked to expand the farm to over 400 head in the mid-90's. During that time, Bob served on the board of directors and a term as president of the Ontario Cattlemen's Association. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Canadian Cattlemen's Association. He also chaired and co-chaired the Environment and Animal-Care Committee of the Canadian Cattlemen's Association. Currently Bob is serving on the boards of the Renfrew County Stewardship Council, the National Farmers Union Renfrew County chapter, and the Ottawa Valley Food Co-op.
As well as playing a significant role in the farming community, Bob puts environment first on the farm. Aside from extensive tree planting and watershed protection, he ensures that his cattle play a positive role in the farm ecosystem. The farm's many environmental innovations have attracted thousands of visitors, including Chinese students, a Korean trade delegation, and professors from the University of Mexico. Our farm has also served as a demonstration site for local farmers to learn about the latest environmental innovations. In recognition of his efforts, Bob was the first recipient of the Ontario Cattlemen's Environmental Stewardship Award in 1994. In 1996, Bob was awarded an Honourary Life Membership in the Ontario Institute of Agrologists. More recently, Bob was inducted into the Renfrew County Agricultural Hall of Fame in 2003.
After many years of working towards a completely sustainable cattle operation, we felt the next step was to begin producing finished grass fed beef, in 2003. This has allowed us to reduce the herd size and concentrate on more environmental projects on the farm and in the community. Grass fed beef is much more evironmentally friendly and good for your health, and we want you, the customer, to be part of the environnmental success of this farm. By purchasing beef direct from our farm, you get more than just a safe and wholesome product. You also contribute to a sustainable farm and its tremendous benefits for both the natural environment and for the rural community. The sixth generation of the Dobson family farm has now joined the farming operation: Bob and Leslie Dobson's daughter Kylah Dobson, and their son-in-law Zach Loeks started Rainbow Heritage Gardens, an organic, heirloom vegetable and berry farming operation in 2007. They are selling shares for the 20015 summer season now in their CSA (Community Supported Agriculture food box program) operation. We are dedicated to ecologically and ethically sound farming practices. Our cattle are raised their entire lives on our farm grazing only the most luscious pastures and eating the highest quality hay. We work with a local provincially inspected abbatoir run by the McGarough family. It is located in Micksburg ON., just 5 km from our farm gate.
On our farm we use: No genetically modified substances No hormones, No antibiotics, No pesticides or herbicides, No grain or corn supplements
Our 100% grass-fed beef is naturally delicious and tender, has many health benefits, & is produced sustainably, with respect for wildlife and aquatic habitat. We invite you to visit our farm to learn more about sustainable, alternative and local food production. Please call ahead to arrange a good time. We hold tours for the public regularly.
